  • What Makes an Excellent Martial Arts Training Partner (part 1?)

What Makes an Excellent Martial Arts Training Partner?
By Derek Dicso Radius Martial Arts Student and Jiu-Jitsu Blue Belt
Anyone who has been training Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, or any other martial art for more than a couple weeks will know that not all training partners are created equal. In time, one will inevitably come to find training partners they enjoy training with the most. However, a great training partner can excel your growth and maximize the results of your training by challenging you, giving you honest feedback, and being trustworthy enough where you can safely experiment with new techniques. Before going into specifics, it is best to outline some potentially obvious things. ....

  • Benefits of Muay Thai Training

    Benefits of Muay Thai Training
In recent years, there has been a surge in people taking up Muay Thai. The sport was once seen as too brutal for the mainstream, but that simply isn’t the case. As these misconceptions are being dispelled, the sport is on the rise among people looking to get fitter and stronger. Let’s take a look at the many benefits of Muay Thai. Physical fitness The main motivation for most people beginning Muay Thai is fitness, a clearly measurable benefit. Muay Thai works multiple energy systems and builds both an aerobic engine and anaerobic capacity. While many forms of exercise require just one or the other, Muay Thai is a complete package. ....

  • Open Letter To Jiu-Jitsu Beginners, From Those On The Mats.

Dear White Belts, Congratulations, you’ve taken the first step and arguably hardest step of your jiu-jitsu career. You’ve signed up for jiu-jitsu classes. The days, months, and years that come will be filled with both difficult and exciting moments. There is an old saying in the martial arts, and it holds particularly true in jiu-jitsu. “A black belt is a white belt that never quit.” Obviously, you must continuously train in order to achieve your goals and master your craft. In jiu-jitsu, however, it may take a long time for a student to see visible progress. Many students get discouraged, and opt to leave jiu-jitsu early out of frustration. “Don’t ....

  • John Botello Seminar

John Botello Seminar - 10th Planet Black Belt This past weekend we hosted 10th Planet Black Belt John Botello for a seminar at 10th Planet Fairfield. John is a black belt under Eddie Bravo, owner/head instructor of 10th Planet Phoenix, and instructor to our moonhead Pat Campagnola. John started training in 2001 under Relson Gracie while in the Navy stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After moving to California he spent time training with Rickson Gracie and Fabio Santos, who he earned his blue belt from. Around that time, John heard about Eddie Bravo from a friend and made the full time switch to training no gi. After leaving the Navy in 2006 he decided to settle in Arizona and ....

  • The Art of Teaching

June 18th marks seven weeks since our official grand opening of 10th Planet Fairfield and our class attendance is starting to build and be consistent. It has been great having a wide variety of students from first timers all the way up to black belts. We have been focusing hard on the 10th Planet Warm Ups and breaking down every position and detail. The Warm Ups are the skeleton and fundamentals of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu and we want to ensure that our students of all levels master them.
Having such a broad range of experience levels in class has really pushed me to evaluate my teaching techniques and improve as an instructor. Speaking in broad terms, the student in their first class ....

  • From White to Black and back to White again

The first installment of how the owner of Radius Martial Arts Academy , Travis Passaro, began his BJJ journey. “What next?” This was the question that started me on the road to living the BJJ and martial arts lifestyle. You see I have always been an athlete - not the biggest or the strongest, the quickest nor the “go-to-guy” - but my body has always had the need to be in motion and athletics has been the key to my (and my parents) sanity…it is to this very day. So when my 12 year rugby career ended at age 31 I was really in a bind as to what to do next. I tried going to the gym, but found it to be completely unsatisfying. I missed the camaraderie of the ....

  • #Leglockapalooza

I was on the road again and busy last weekend with a trip to Ann Arbor, MI for The Great Lakes Training Camp Leglockapalooza held at 10th Planet Ann Arbor. Rather than a few hours to New Jersey, this road trip took me almost 12 hours all the way across NY, through Ontario Canada, past Detroit, and into Ann Arbor. It was a ton of tiring miles on the road but well worth the experience and knowledge gained. Saturday kicked off with a seminar by Chris Herzog from 10th Planet Rochester. I was 20 minutes late getting in due to a hold up at the border getting back into the U.S., but luckily everybody was running on 10th Planet time and I only missed a few minutes. Chris taught some basics of his ....
