Open Letter To Jiu-Jitsu Beginners, From Those On The Mats.

Dear White Belts, Congratulations, you’ve taken the first step and arguably hardest step of your jiu-jitsu career. You’ve signed up for jiu-jitsu classes. The days, months, and years that come will be filled with both difficult and exciting moments. There is an old saying in the martial arts, and it holds particularly true in jiu-jitsu. “A black belt is a white belt that never quit.” Obviously, you must continuously train in order to achieve your goals and master your craft. In jiu-jitsu, however, it may take a long time for a student to see visible progress. Many students get discouraged, and opt to leave jiu-jitsu early out of frustration. “Don’t ....

  • John Botello Seminar

John Botello Seminar - 10th Planet Black Belt This past weekend we hosted 10th Planet Black Belt John Botello for a seminar at 10th Planet Fairfield. John is a black belt under Eddie Bravo, owner/head instructor of 10th Planet Phoenix, and instructor to our moonhead Pat Campagnola. John started training in 2001 under Relson Gracie while in the Navy stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After moving to California he spent time training with Rickson Gracie and Fabio Santos, who he earned his blue belt from. Around that time, John heard about Eddie Bravo from a friend and made the full time switch to training no gi. After leaving the Navy in 2006 he decided to settle in Arizona and ....

  • The Art of Teaching

June 18th marks seven weeks since our official grand opening of 10th Planet Fairfield and our class attendance is starting to build and be consistent. It has been great having a wide variety of students from first timers all the way up to black belts. We have been focusing hard on the 10th Planet Warm Ups and breaking down every position and detail. The Warm Ups are the skeleton and fundamentals of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu and we want to ensure that our students of all levels master them.
Having such a broad range of experience levels in class has really pushed me to evaluate my teaching techniques and improve as an instructor. Speaking in broad terms, the student in their first class ....

  • From White to Black and back to White again

The first installment of how the owner of Radius Martial Arts Academy , Travis Passaro, began his BJJ journey. “What next?” This was the question that started me on the road to living the BJJ and martial arts lifestyle. You see I have always been an athlete - not the biggest or the strongest, the quickest nor the “go-to-guy” - but my body has always had the need to be in motion and athletics has been the key to my (and my parents) sanity…it is to this very day. So when my 12 year rugby career ended at age 31 I was really in a bind as to what to do next. I tried going to the gym, but found it to be completely unsatisfying. I missed the camaraderie of the ....

  • #Leglockapalooza

I was on the road again and busy last weekend with a trip to Ann Arbor, MI for The Great Lakes Training Camp Leglockapalooza held at 10th Planet Ann Arbor. Rather than a few hours to New Jersey, this road trip took me almost 12 hours all the way across NY, through Ontario Canada, past Detroit, and into Ann Arbor. It was a ton of tiring miles on the road but well worth the experience and knowledge gained. Saturday kicked off with a seminar by Chris Herzog from 10th Planet Rochester. I was 20 minutes late getting in due to a hold up at the border getting back into the U.S., but luckily everybody was running on 10th Planet time and I only missed a few minutes. Chris taught some basics of his ....

  • Show The Art Finishers Sub Only

This past weekend I drove down to Rockaway, NJ to check out the Show The Art Finishers Sub Only event. The event is a collaboration between Show The Art and Finishers MMA/10th Planet Bethlehem and was held at the Main brothers academy, Pure Mixed Martial Arts. There were a few reasons behind my decision to go to the event; support my friends in their business ventures, learn some tricks of the trade to apply to the Radius Invitational , and watch some high level jiu jitsu. The high level jiu jitsu did not disappoint! There were two 16 man brackets at 135 lbs and 155 lbs and both were action-packed. It was a $100 entry with the winner taking all of the money. There were equal parts ....

  • Roll For Nichole

Roll For Nichole This past weekend we were paid a visit by our friend Travis Newaza for a seminar while he was on the east coast. This was the third seminar that Travis has done at Radius in the last year so everybody knew that they could expect an entertaining class with some great techniques. Travis did not disappoint, emerging from an Uber (that he took 75 miles from Newark due to his intended ride over sleeping) complaining about Monsanto and the crappy Dunkin Donuts coffee and breakfast that he was forced to settle for. All joking aside, Travis taught a great seminar that included techniques and concepts that could be used by the rookie and veteran students alike. After a quick ....

  • Radius Invitational Recap

It has been two weeks since the event and the dust has finally settled and life is back to normal. The inaugural event went off great with The Warehouse at The Fairfield Theatre Company providing an incredible setting. All of the competitors arrived on time and made weight like the professionals that they are. The first match to kick off the event was a thriller between Tori Applegate from 10th Planet Gulf Shores and Faye Farrales from the Renzo Gracie Academy. After a closely contested match that saw a lot of heavy top pressure and control from Faye, Tori was able to get to the mount and secure an arm bar for the victory with only 25 seconds remaining. That excitement is exactly why ....

  • New England Submission Challenge

This past weekend Radius Martial Arts/10th Planet Fairfield took a small team to compete at the New England Submission Challenge (NESC) in Manchester, CT. The NESC is a submission only tournament with 15 minute preliminary matches, no time limit finals, and all submissions legal in the expert division. Everybody that competed performed well in wins and losses, implementing their game plans and strategies. We are proud of everybody for stepping on the mats to compete as that is the biggest challenge for many people. Just getting out there to compete, win or lose, puts you in a small percentage of the population. I encourage everybody to get out there at least once to test your skills. ....
